HTML <meta> tag

Usage

Allows you to embed information about your document within the page code, such as page descriptions and keywords. Must be placed within the <head> tag.

Example

Code:

Setting a page description:

<head>
<meta name="description" content="HTML and CSS tutorials" />
</head>

Refresh a page every 10 seconds:

<head>
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="10" />
</head>

Required Attributes

  • content - defines the meta information

Optional Attributes

  • name - specifies the type of Meta attribute being used, such as author, description, keywords, generator, or revised
  • http-equiv - connects the content attribute to a HTTP header such as content-type, expires, refresh, set-cookie
  • scheme - defines a format for interpreting the content attribute
